At Oceans 1, we specialize in underwater photogrammetry, a fundamental scientific discipline in our work. Through our customized photogrammetric methods, we generate orthomosaics and 3D models of underwater environments. To aid our analytical capabilities, we employ advanced AI-enhanced software specifically designed for orthomosaic analysis. This software enables precise identification, counting, and measurement of individual coral specimens, providing essential data on various aspects of the coral community, including coral cover, growth, mortality, size distribution, recruitment, damage assessment, disease prevalence, bleaching events, and recovery. This information far exceeds the output from the traditional Point Intercept Method.
The image below showcases our detailed annotation process applied to a ‘transect’ within a 8 x 12 metre orthomosaic. The orthomosaics can undergo analysis through either transect-specific assessments or a comprehensive examination of the entire orthomosaic. The software aids in outlining corals, assigning unique identifiers, and capturing precise size information. This data serves as a lasting record of the coral community, facilitating long-term monitoring to track changes over time within these dynamic marine ecosystems.
