Oceans 1 Marine Consulting - What we do

At Oceans 1, our marine biologists combine years of industry experience to provide expertise in the delivery of multidisciplinary marine monitoring surveys with a focus on achieving the highest level of scientific quality.

Our team has extensive experience undertaking coral, seagrass, water quality, macroalgae and biosecurity surveys. From these surveys we have become highly proficient in using techniques that include underwater photography, videography, observation and sample collection. Our proficiency is further enhanced by our scientists being qualified to ADAS part 2 (Surface Supplied Breathing Apparatus) with a NITROX endorsment.

Oceans 1 also specialises in underwater photogrammetry, particularly in the context of coral reefs. Our experts utilize cutting-edge photogrammetric technology and methodologies to create highly detailed and accurate 3D models and orthomosaics of coral reef ecosystems. The orthomosaics are then analysed using an A.I. enhanced software to provide a permanent record of the coral community and to assess changes over time.

Coral surveys

Our experience undertaking coral surveys extends to monitoring parameters including:

  • Coral reef percentage cover

  • Coral identification

  • Coral health

  • Coral growth

  • Coral survival

  • Coral recruitment

  • Coral spawning; and

  • Coral disease

Anlysis of data can include the use of tools such as Coral Point Count and Photogrammetry.

Seagrass surveys

Our experience undertaking seagrass surveys extends to monitoring parameters including:

  • Seagrass species identification

  • Seagrass percentage cover

  • Epiphytic percentage cover

  • Size of seed banks

  • Photosynthetic Available Radiation

  • Colonisation depth limits

  • Seagrass shoot density; and

  • Multispectral surveys

Water quality surveys

At Oceans 1, we have extensive experience undertaking water quality monitoring using specialist scientific instrumentation. This has included monitoring water quality to assess the impact of dredge plumes on benthic habitats such as corals, seagrass, invertebrates and macroalgae. Through this experience we have developed the technical knowledge to understand and identify the apropriate instrumentation to obtain the highest quality data.

Macroalgae surveys

Our experience undertaking macroalgae surveys extends to monitoring parameters including:

  • Macroalgae identification

  • Macroalgae percentage cover

  • Macroalgae biomass

Analysis of data can include the use of tools such as Coral Point Count.
